Edinburgh-born DJ and electronic producer Natasha Kitty Katt turns eight chapters of her home city’s darker history into The Stone Tape Confessions, released this Halloween as Auld Reekie Nocturne. The album moves through the executions of the Maiden, the witch trials, plague-stricken closes, the suffering of the Greyfriars Covenanters, Deacon Brodie’s double life, the hardship and hauntings of the South Bridge Vaults, the murders of Burke and Hare, and the troubling legacy of anatomist Dr Robert Knox.
For Natasha, the project brings years in electronic music into a deeply personal exploration of her home city. The project has given her the freedom to fully unleash her darker creative side, drawing together her love of synths, gothic atmosphere and storytelling. Through her own vocals, electric guitar and synthesisers, she explores the fear, belief, power and survival behind these histories, inviting listeners to feel their weight as well as discover their stories.
The project reaches beyond the studio and into the places that inspired it, with filming across Edinburgh’s streets, kirkyards and underground spaces, as well as rural Scotland. A forthcoming vinyl edition limited to just 100 copies, two music videos and an illustrated companion zine bring listeners further into its world. Combining historical context, original artwork and three guest ghost stories, the zine offers a closer look at the stories behind the music.
