Behind the grand columns of Surgeons’ Hall on Nico Behind the grand columns of Surgeons’ Hall on Nicolson Street lies one of Edinburgh’s most important medical landmarks. Home to the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since 1832, its roots stretch back even further to 1505, when Edinburgh’s barber-surgeons were formally recognised by the city and granted their Seal of Cause. Designed by William Henry Playfair, Surgeons’ Hall became a symbol of Edinburgh’s rise as a world leader in medicine and surgical education. Its museum collections, first established in 1699, hold centuries of surgical history, from early anatomy and pathology to life-saving medical breakthroughs.
But its story also reflects Edinburgh’s darker side. The anatomy trade that fuelled the city’s medical schools created a desperate demand for bodies, one that Burke and Hare exploited to murderous ends in 1828. Their crimes directly prompted the Anatomy Act of 1832, passed the very same year Surgeons’ Hall opened, forcing the medical establishment to confront how it sourced its specimens.
Surgeons’ Hall also played a role in social change, most notably on 18 November 1870, when the Edinburgh Seven, the first women to study medicine at a British university, arrived to sit an anatomy exam and were met by a hostile mob that pelted them with mud, hurled abuse, and slammed the gates in their faces. The riot shocked the nation, turned public opinion in the women’s favour, and became a landmark moment in the fight for women’s education.
Today, Surgeons’ Hall stands as both a monument to scientific progress and a reminder that Edinburgh’s medical legacy was shaped by brilliance, controversy, and the fight for change.
